Code Clinic)

Learning Engagement Strategies from Top-rated MOOCs

Hew (2016), based on course review data from Coursetalk, analyzed three highly acclaimed MOOCs (covering programming, literature, and design for social good) using a mixed-methods approach. He categorized five strategies to promote student engagement:

  1. Problem-centric learning with clear expositions

    • Focus on problem-solving rather than isolated topics/content

    • Use multiple real-world applications to explain concepts, accompanied by practical tools, strategies, and techniques

  2. Instructor accessibility and passion

    • Offer scheduled time for students to interact directly with instructors/TAs (e.g., Code Clinics for programming help)

    • Organize panel discussions to let students naturally engage with the content through conversations

    • Show humor during lectures

    • Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for student projects

  3. Peer interaction

    • Encourage peer assessments (students exchange views and perspectives)

    • Discuss pros/cons and differences among perspectives

    • Host live discussions

  4. Active learning

    • Assign projects and writing tasks

    • Use automated grading for quizzes

    • Enable peer review with constructive feedback

  5. Course resources tailored to learning needs

    • Deliver key concepts through short videos

    • Allow playback adjustments (speed, video quality)

    • Provide downloadable supplementary materials (slides, lecture notes, transcripts) to meet diverse learning needs
