Hew (2016), based on course review data from Coursetalk, analyzed three highly acclaimed MOOCs (covering programming, literature, and design for social good) using a mixed-methods approach. He categorized five strategies to promote student engagement:
Problem-centric learning with clear expositions
Focus on problem-solving rather than isolated topics/content
Use multiple real-world applications to explain concepts, accompanied by practical tools, strategies, and techniques
Instructor accessibility and passion
Offer scheduled time for students to interact directly with instructors/TAs (e.g., Code Clinics for programming help)
Organize panel discussions to let students naturally engage with the content through conversations
Show humor during lectures
Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for student projects
Peer interaction
Encourage peer assessments (students exchange views and perspectives)
Discuss pros/cons and differences among perspectives
Host live discussions
Active learning
Assign projects and writing tasks
Use automated grading for quizzes
Enable peer review with constructive feedback
Course resources tailored to learning needs
Deliver key concepts through short videos
Allow playback adjustments (speed, video quality)
Provide downloadable supplementary materials (slides, lecture notes, transcripts) to meet diverse learning needs
