AI Teaching Guidelines
Summarised from the NTHU Implementation Guidelines on AI Ethics Statements and Learning Assessment (1 September 2026).
INTENTIONAL DESIGN
Three core principles
1
AIAvoid over-reliance on AI
Check how students use AI with three criteria: activity awareness, output assessment, competence maintenance.

2
Assessment in the age of AI
Two lanes: controlled (AI restricted) and uncontrolled (AI allowed, with explanation). Don’t rely on AI detectors.

3
Put an AI statement in the syllabus
Choose unrestricted, conditional or prohibited use. Three templates included.

4
The instructor’s changing role
From giving answers to modelling judgement: show students how expert judgement is formed.

AI。Teaching in the age of AI means helping students genuinely learn even when they use AI, rather than banning it.
1
Students need to judge when to do the work themselves and when to seek AI help. Instructors teach not only how to use AI, but when and why to use it, and when to stop and decide for themselves.
Three modes of student–AI collaboration
AI-led monitoring
AI gives extensive feedback; students accept and adjust.
AI。Watch for: growing dependence on AI.
Student-led, AI-assisted
Students set goals and decide; AI checks, gives feedback and challenges.
Watch for: requires strong metacognition.
Dynamic negotiation
AI and students swap roles as learning progresses.
Watch for: needs intentional design by the instructor.
The modes are not mutually exclusive. The goal is for students to move from accepting AI’s answers to using AI to support their own judgement, while remaining responsible for their goals, key decisions and final work.
Three criteria for intentional AI use
1
Activity awareness
Know which steps you did and which AI assisted; students can explain AI’s role in ideation, analysis, writing or revision.
2
Output assessment
Don’t accept answers as-is: verify, find errors and gaps, compare outputs, and judge whether they fit the context.
3
Competence maintenance
Even when AI can do it, keep opportunities for independent thinking, hands-on practice and verification.
Over-reliance distorts students’ sense of their own ability
AI placebo effect
After finishing tasks with AI, students overestimate their own ability and mistake AI’s help for their own progress.
AI ghostwriter effect
Even knowing AI contributed heavily, students still treat the output as their own, weakening ownership, responsibility and critical review.
A vicious cycle of skill erosion
Can no longer judge AI output
AI」From using AI to using AI intentionally
Own it
Learning is not just students completing tasks with AI, but using, evaluating and revising AI output and owning the final judgement. This keeps fast, fluent AI answers from replacing the deep thinking students need.
2
ASSESSMENT DESIGN IN THE AGE OF AI
AI can produce credible answers to problem sets, coding tasks and written reports. CTLD recommends the two-lane approach used at the Universities of Auckland and Sydney: instructors decide deliberately how far students may use AI in each assessment.
The two-lane approach
AI use
Generally restricted
目的Purpose
Verify independent achievement and protect the credibility of degrees
Focus
Authenticity & Assurance
Typical formats
Invigilated exams, orals, live practicals, presentations with Q&A, supervised digital exams
AI use
Allowed without limits, but students must explain how they used it
目的Purpose
Build the ability to work with AI and exercise judgement
Focus
Learning & AI capability
Typical formats
Lab reports, portfolios, case analyses, presentations, posters, design work, simulations
Different lanes can be combined within one course, or even within one learning design.
Don’t make more in-person exams the only answer
More timed, high-stakes in-class assessment can reduce cognitive outsourcing, but may also cut the sustained thinking that problem sets and projects require. NTHU does not recommend relying solely on more invigilated exams or timed writing; balance controlled assessment with process-based assessment, projects, practicals, portfolios and oral defences.
Avoid third-party AI detection tools
High false positives
Students often use AI only to brainstorm, edit or polish, yet may still be flagged.
Fairness concerns
May disproportionately affect non-native English speakers and students from different backgrounds.
Privacy risks
Some tools collect and process student data and identifiable information.
Erodes trust
Results should not be the sole evidence of misconduct; over-reliance breeds distrust.
Look at the learning process instead
Staged submissions, regular project check-ins or one-to-one meetings, in-class writing and practice, oral explanation, and draft → feedback → revision cycles. Coding courses can use version control such as GitHub to keep a record of iterations.

PUT AN AI ETHICS STATEMENT IN THE SYLLABUS
State in the syllabus how students may use AI, including how to cite it and disclose their use. This gives instructors, students and the university a shared basis for handling academic integrity.
AIChoose one: how students may use AI
Unrestricted use
No disclosure needed
Conditional use
Students disclose how generative AI was used (Examples 1 and 2)
Prohibited
State the related assessment and monitoring measures (Example 3)
Three statement templates
4
THE INSTRUCTOR’S ROLE: FROM GIVING ANSWERS TO MODELLING JUDGEMENT
Learning quality increasingly depends on how people ask questions, use AI and judge its output. The instructor’s irreplaceable value is no longer supplying answers students can get from AI, but showing how expert judgement is formed.
Following and swimming together”: make judgement visible
“The university is like water, teachers and students like fish, and their activity like swimming. The big fish lead and the small fish follow. After swimming together long enough, students absorb what they observe without seeking it and achieve it without forcing it.”
1941Mei Yi-chi, “An Interpretation of the University”, 1941
設計判斷情境Design situations for judgement→示範判斷歷程Model the reasoning→引導學生形成判斷Guide students to their own judgement
